Specific responsibilities

Reporting to the Commercial Lines Manager – Ontario, the Senior Underwriter is responsible for the development and successful execution of broker and territory level business plans for an assigned group of brokers in accordance with the regional commercial business plan for profitability growth, retention, and service standards.  The Senior Underwriter will be required to visit brokers who represent Optimum Insurance Company in order to promote and present the Company’s commercial products and generate profitable growth and retention. They will be required to make risk selection decisions within an assigned level of authority and develop productive and successful working relationships with assigned brokers.  The position also requires the senior underwriter to coach and mentor team members to develop their technical underwriting knowledge and to enhance broker relationships.   The successful candidate will need to apply effective pricing and underwriting strategies in accordance with company guidelines and personal underwriting authority limits.  The successful candidate will also be required to maintain an awareness of market trends, price levels, legal requirements, and case law applicable to commercial underwriting along with the ability to negotiate optimally to develop and maintain a profitable book of business.

We are looking to hire someone to work in either our Toronto or North Bay office.  We have a hybrid work model that preserves the balance between working from home and that in-person interacting which is so valuable. 

Education, Work Experience and Aptitudes

In order to meet the requirements of this position, the candidate must have post secondary education or comparable previous office experience. The candidate should be recognized for their good communication skills (verbal and written), efficient keyboarding, and attention to detail.  They must be a team player with a positive attitude.
